Guidance and Site Rules

Before you can use the equipment and machines or attempt practical work in our forge or workshop you need to understand a few basic safety rules. Workshop safety is important. By keeping your mind on the job at hand, and concentrating on what you are doing there is no reason for injuries to happen.

To use our facilities you must:

  • ​Be 16 years old or over.

  • Any 16 year old must be accompanied by an adult over 18.

  • Wear rough clothes that you do not mind getting damaged.

  • Wear natural fibre trousers or jeans that cover the whole leg.

  • Wear natural fibre tops with sleeves past the shoulder preferably full length.

  • Wear suitable shoes – leather or steel toecaps that cover the whole foot.

  • Not wear synthetic fibres in the forge, including most common polyesters, nylons, acrylics, etc.

  • Not wear any jewellery or clothing with dangling parts that may get caught.

We will:

  • Induct you into correct use of the equipment.

  • Mentor you throughout your project.

  • Guide you where guidance is wanted and required.

As daily maker you are also required to:

  • Bring your own materials or contact us so we can source them or point you in the right direction.

  • Bring your own hand tools if you have them.

As a professional monthly user you are also required to:

  • Provide your own personal protective equipment and hand tools.

  • Provide ID, proof of insurance and any relevant qualifications your currently hold.

We will:

  • Give you the freedom to design and make independently, unless you need or want help.

  • Check your familiarity with equipment and show you how to use any that you are unfamiliar with.

  • Maintain the equipment available.

Parking

Whilst there is parking on-site, this is limited so please call ahead to check availability. There is a car park nearby which is approximately 50p for all day, located to the rear of TPG Disable Aids, around the corner from Hereford Make and within easy walking distance.

National Certificate of Blacksmithing & Metal Work

NVQ Level 2 in Preforming Engineering Operations

Foundation Diploma Art and Design

BA (Hons) Contemporary Applied Arts

Experienced welder/fabricator/machinist/fitter

Experience in business consultancy

Experience in marketing consultancy

However, we do not hold formal teaching accreditation. If you wish to gain a formal qualification, we recommend Herefordshire and Ludlow College and the Rural Craft Centre or Hereford College of Arts. Students are most welcome to join Hereford MAKE to supplement their education.

Yes, we are open to all who want to MAKE, whether in Hereford or beyond, as long as you respect other users and work safely.

Yes, monthly users are entitled to storage space, there may also be further storage opportunities in future. Feel free to make enquires.

Yes, our monthly packages provide a discount to more regular users and full access users gain a student discount with valid student ID. Further information on funding can be found on our Find Funding page

There is some flexibility as to who can use MAKE when, so feel free to make further enquires, but as a general rule:

Monthly User Hours: 9 am – 6 pm on weekdays.

Booked Daily or Evening Use and Inductions: 6 pm – 9 pm on weekdays, 10 am – 4 pm on weekends.
