Supporting Neurodiverse Participants

At Hereford Make, we believe that creativity flourishes when everyone feels welcome and supported. Our community of blacksmiths, farriers and creative artists provides welcome support, and this extends to ensuring our creative hub is accessible to participants with all neurotypes.

We understand that neurological differences – including autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, and others – bring unique strengths to creative work. Whether you're joining us for a taster session or developing your blacksmithing skills, we're committed to creating an environment where everyone can focus on developing their creative talent.

Our Inclusive Approach

Before Your Visit Get in touch with us to discuss any specific needs or preferences. We can chat about workshop timings, sensory considerations, equipment preferences, break schedules, and communication styles. This helps ensure you have the best possible experience from the moment you arrive.

Flexible Workshop Environment

With our flexible terms you can rent space or just a work bench from just a couple of hours to however long you need. Our spaces are designed with different sensory needs in mind:

  • Earplugs and noise-reducing headphones available for those sensitive to workshop sounds

  • Designated quiet areas for breaks when needed

  • Clear visual schedules and step-by-step guides for techniques

  • Adjustable workbench heights and flexible seating options

  • Marked individual working areas for those who prefer defined spaces

  • Natural lighting where possible to create a calmer environment

Learning That Works for You

Our instructors understand that people learn differently. We offer:

  • Visual guides alongside verbal instruction – perfect for complex techniques

  • Hands-on learning that suits kinaesthetic learners

  • One-to-one guidance when helpful

  • Work at your own pace without pressure

  • Clear safety protocols explained both verbally and visually

Celebrating Strengths

Many neurodiverse participants excel in areas that are tremendous assets in blacksmithing:

  • Exceptional attention to detail in finishing work

  • Creative problem-solving when projects don't go to plan

  • Innovative approaches to traditional techniques

  • Sustained focus on long-term projects

  • Pattern recognition in metal work

Getting Started

Taster Sessions

We offer taster sessions covering a wide range of different processes, techniques and skills, giving you the opportunity to explore what suits and interests you most. These are ideal for experiencing our environment in a low-pressure setting and building confidence.

Ongoing Support

  • Regular check-ins during longer courses

  • Flexible scheduling to accommodate good and challenging days

  • Connection with other participants who share similar experiences

  • Continuous adaptation based on what works best for you

Safety and Wellbeing

Safety is paramount in our workshop environment. We provide advance notice of loud noises, clear safety protocols, and trained staff who understand when someone might need support or space. Our approach focuses on preventing overwhelm rather than managing crisis.
